‘’DIGITAL LIBRARY’’

Ladies and gentlemen !

People can not live without information, one of the solution is reading. Someone will know, understand, analyze, remember the information that he gets from reading. But now, Indonesian is still not aware how important reading is!

Even, according to world bank report, Indonesia is the country which has the lowest reading interest, although we have a big potency to be a superior country. And also, from UNESCO’s research Indonesian reading interest is the lowest in ASEAN. It could be the reason why our country is hard to compete with the other country. In reading, we can open the world window , when the world window has opened, we could see it, it means we can see all about the world , so the way we think is more reasonable to be a superior country.

The lowest of Indonesian reading interest really influences the quality of country’s itself, because without reading , we will never know about the science and information in the world, so Indonesian will be known as a bad country.

So now, where is our young generation? Where are they? Are they busy to have fun and wasting time with their friend? Don’t they have a little time to read? Did they think that reading is tiring and boring? Can we realize that? No, they’re wrong, reading is not tiring and boring because there is an electronic library. It gives us a various information and knowledge easily, we will not be tired or bored because it’s easy and fun, and it’s also vary.

So what is electronic library? According to Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia, an electronic library (also referred to as digital library or digital repository) is a focused collection of digital objects that can include text, visual material, audio material, video material stored as Electronic media formats.

And Mr. Sugiyanto (a librarian from java) electronic library is a unit of work in the form of a place to store a collection of library materials systematically setting and can be used by the user as a source of information.

This is a short story of digital library; before 1960: it’s still a traditional library. In the middle of 1960-1988: the library is still developed in using index of catalog. In 1991: there is TULIP ( The University Licensing Project). 1995: NSF/ARPA/NASA was continuing the research , so digital library is used for the 1^st time.

According to Larry Lannom, director of information management technology at the nonprofit corporation said, “all the problems associated with digital libraries are wrapped up in archiving, if 100 years people can still read your article, we will have solved the problem”. Daniel Akst, author of the Webster chronicle, proposes that “the future of libraries and of information is digital”. Therefore, they believe that “soon it will be technologically possible for an average person to access virtually all recorded information.

Here some of the advantages of digital library:

1.      Digital libraries have the potential to store much more information, simply because digital information requires very little physical space to contain it.

2.      The cost of maintaining a digital library can be much lower than that of a traditional library. A physical library must spend large sums of money paying for staff, book maintenance, rent, and additional books.

3.      Digital libraries may be more willing to adopt innovations in technology providing users.
4.   No physical boundary. The user of a digital library need not to go to the library physically; people from all over the world can gain access to the same information, as long as an Internet connection is available.

5.      24 hours easily accessible

6.      Multiple access, and etc.

Friends remember! Human was created by God given mind and conscience, by a hope we could be the leader for this country. There is a little hope for this country, there is a little hope for this nation, expectations that can make our nation return to smile, behind the deterioration of mind, there are a few human who still have a conscience. Their ears still hear the scream of this nation, their eyes still widely open to see a reality, and their heart still can feel the sadness of this country.

Friends do you want to know who are they? Do you want to know about them? Please listen to me carefully, really carefully. It’s you my friend , yes you are the small but the bright hope that will grow into a great light, a light in the darkness.

Just start reading, start from now! Let’s make reading become our culture, become our habits in everyday. We could read in Digital library easily.

And the last, let’s beg to the God, let’s we pray together “Dear lord, please make us enjoy and happy to read everyday, so our nation will be known as a good country. God please make ‘electronic library’ become a successful program, please make our young generation become a change maker & God please make our dreams come true”.

But remember my friend, pray is not enough without any actions, so please do it with a real action, support it with a real action. Every single thing that we do will help our future, because this nation is in our hand, so now let’s start reading friends, reading in digital library!
