Myth Of Jambi "Pirau Ghost"

Once upon a time, in Jambi, there was a king who has a supernatural power and invulnerable. He was the 1^st King of Jambi who comes from Keling , India. Besides he has a supernatural power, he was also famous, wise, and prudent. He was always thinking about the prosperity of his citizens. So, this situation made people become very happy in doing their daily activities. That is Why, he was very respected by all of his citizens.

One day, the quiet atmosphere suddenly became very scary, why? It’s because of the coming  of Pirau ghost. Pirau ghost always came to frighten the small children who were playing and disturbing the babies sleeping. If the pirau ghost saw a baby or small children, so the Ghost likes to chortle happily , so the children become frightened and the babies were crying. But, if the parents keep their children, the ghost did not dare to come to disturb them. Therefore, the parents should always keep their children well while playing or sleeping in the crib in every time. That situation made people become restless, because they could not leave the house to go for a work.

Because of the situation, the leaders from Tujuh Koto, Sembilan Koto, and Batin Duo Belas or more commonly called Dubalang tujuh, Dubalang sembilan, and Dubalang Duo Belas, trying to chase the ghost away by reading all kinds of spells that they could. However, all in vain. In fact, the behavior of the ghost was crazier than before. Almost at any time, day or night, he always came annoying the children to cry and scream in fear.

"We have done all kinds of ways, we have tried, but the pirau ghost still did not want to get out of this country. What should we do now? "Asked Dubalang Tujuh confused.

"How about if we talk about this problem to the king?" Suggested Dubalang sembilan.

"I agree. He has a supernatural power and a powerful king, doesn’t he ?" Said Dubalang Duo belas.

"Alright then! Let's go together and meet our king, " said Dubalang tujuh.

And finally they had an agreement, after that all the dubalang immediately went to the King of Jambi. Arriving at the palace, they immediately report all events that are befalling their country.

"Forgive me, my king! We would like to report something to you "said Dubalang duo belas.

"Say it! What on earth has happened in this country, Dubalang? "Asked the King of Jambi curious.

"sorry my king! A few days ago, the Pirau Ghost always came to disturb our children. At first they were amused and laughed, but eventually they cry and scream of fear, "said Dubalang Duo belas.

"Forgive me, my king! We've tried so many ways, but the ghost always comes to disturb us, "added Dubalang sembilan.

"how about the face of the Ghost, dubalang? Have you ever seen ? "Asked the King of Jambi.

"no, not yet my King! We just heard his laughing when the children were crying and screaming, "said Dubalang Duo belas.

Hearing that news, the reports of  dubalang, the King of Jambi just smiled while stroking his thick beard which is already graying. Then he rose from his seat and walked around dubalang.

"Alright then. Just go back to your region, then inform all of your citizens to make Lukah”. Ladies and gentlemen, Lukah here just like a fish trap that usually used by the fishermen to catch the fish. “Alright then. Just go back to your region, then inform all of your citizens to make Lukah”.  so every person will make it! "The command of the King.

"Forgive me, my king! What for is that? Is it for fishing? "Asked Duabalang Duo belas confused.

"Come on dubalang, it’s simple. Just do it! Do what I told you before. Do not forget, after they have already made the lukah, put it on the top of a hill immediately and tied it on strong pillars. After that, every morning and evening you climb up the hill to see all the lukah! "The King's command.

Hearing the explanation from the King, the dubalang tigo immediately excused himself to execute, to do the command of the King. None of them dared to re-ask the king. On the way home, they kept wondering to themself about the King's command just now.

Arriving in each country, the dulabang tigo directly informed the king's comment to all the citizens. Of course, The citizens were surprised when they hear the command. When they asked it to the dubalang, they do not get a definite answer. All dubalang also did not know what is the purpose of the King. However, because it is the king's command, willy nilly the residents had to make lukah immediately, although they were very confused and did not know what is the purpose of the King. then they put the lukah on the top of a hill which is not far from their homes. Every morning and evening all the dubalang climbed up the hill to see and look into the lukah. On the 1^st day, the 2^nd day, the 3^rd day till the 6^th day they climbed up the hill to see and look into the lukah, but it has not shown any signs of Pirau Ghost.

 But in the morning of the seventh day, when Dubalang Duo belas climbed up to the top of the hill to check out the lukah. He was very surprised when He saw something terrified in a lukah. His face just like a human, but he was small and horrified. he was also able to speak like a human. When Dubalang Duo Belas approached him, the strange creature had a sound which is already familiar in his ear.

"Hey, listen! I think I often hear that voice. It is the voice of the Pirau Ghost , isn’t it? "asked Dubalang Duo belas in his heart.

After he made sure himself that the sound was actually the voice of the Pirau ghost, then he immediately reported it to the King.

"Forgive me, my king! I was just from the hill. I find the strange creature trapped in a lukah. Is he the Pirau ghost which always disturbs us? "Asked Dubalang Duo belas.

"you are right, dubalang! It’s true! Let’s climb up the hill and bring me to him! “ said the king of Jambi.

"okay my king! Follow me! "Said Dubalang Duo belas while going to the hill.

Before climb up the hill, he also invite Dubalang Sembilan, dubalang tujuh and all of his citizens to join in taking the strange creature in the lukah.

"have you known what is this?! This creature named Pirau Ghost which always disturb your children, "said the King.

"Understand my king!" Replied the dubalang all at once.

"Dubalang! Give me a sharp sword! I would like to cut the body of this ghost, "said the king to dubalang sembilan.

Hearing the threat by the king, the pirau ghost immediately asked for forgiveness to the King and all of his citizens.

"forgive me, please forgive me! Do not kill me! If you let me go from this trap, I will fulfill all of your requests. You are a wise king, aren’t you? "

"Well, I will let you go! But i only have two requests. First, after going out of this trap, leave this country and never come back again to disturb my citizens, especially small children. Second, give the Pinto-Pinto ring to me, now. Give it to me! "Said the king.

Ladies and gentleman, the Pinto-pinto ring is a ring which has a great power, a great supernatural power.

The Pirau ghost agreed with the request of the King. After releasing from the trap, soon he gave pinto-pinto ring to the King, and left Jambi forever. Since then, the Jambi was never disturbed by the Pirau ghost. The conditions return in peace and quiet, and this situation made people become very happy in doing their daily activities again.

Several years later after the incident of the Pirau Ghost, King of Jambi suddenly want to prove the great power of pinto-pinto ring which is given by the ghost. But because he didn’t  want to be known by the people in Jambi, so he told the people that he would like to go back to his country in Keling, India.

After he is in his country, the King of Jambi immediately prove the miracle of the pinto-pinto ring.

"Hey pinto-pinto ring! Make this Mumbay City as reigned of pearls, jewels, and the diamonds!” asked the king.

In an instant, the atmosphere of the city suddenly change become sparkling. All the corners of the city filled with pearls, jewels and diamonds. How happy the king to see the beautiful scenery and tempting. But as a wise king, a few years later he sent one of his sons named Sultan Baring to substitute him as a King of Jambi.

The people of Jambi were so happy, because he is also a wise king like his father. It is said that Sultan Baring king subsequent the other kings and sultans, such as Sultan Taha Syaiffudin and Raden Ino Kartopati.

One of the moral value of the story above is the virtue of discussing in solving all the problems. This case shown by the attitude and the behavior of Dubalang tujuh, Dubalang sembilan, and Dubalang Duo Belas. When they were not able to solve the problem, they immediately consulted to find a way out. In Malays life, discussing or deliberation is upheld, respected and honored, because of discussing all the difficulties faced easier to solve.

Another lesson to be learned from this story is the science is very important in human life, because of the Science, all difficulties can be overcome easily. Therefore, everyone is required to study hard in order to have the knowledge. According to the elders of the Malays, the benefits of the science is not only for personal gain, it is also beneficial for the community, the nation and the state. That is why, in Malays life, the knowledge is very important.
